Bioeconomy made in Brandenburg: MLUK brochure (in German) presents best practice examples

Food packaging made of bio-based raw materials, insulation materials made of natural fibres as well as insect snacks: Brandenburg offers a broad spectrum of sustainable bio-economy with a regional and innovative bio-based added value. Brandenburg's Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Climate together with the state's Ministry of Science, have compiled the sustainability criteria for bio-economic management in a brochure. This coloured, 80-page publication with graphics and photos is aimed at experts as well as an interested public and was produced by the Institute for Ecological Economy Research (IÖW) Berlin in cooperation with the ATB.

About two dozen best practice examples for bio-economic value creation are presented, which were selected in a participatory process during a series of public events. The focus is on novel and promising methods for the use of organic by-products and residues and their potential for economically viable implementation.

Bio-economy uses biogenic resources such as microorganisms, plants and animals for sustainable economic activity, taking into account economic, ecological and social aspects. Research in this field contributes to the development of novel, environmentally compatible and resource-saving products and services based on biological and sustainable raw materials.

Brandenburg's activities in the field of bioeconomy are based on the European Green Deal, the bioeconomy strategy of the European Union as well as on the national bioeconomy strategy of the German government. In the State of Brandenburg, more than 30 percent of the non-university research institutions and five of the universities located here conduct research on bio-economy issues. 

The 80-page colour publication, which includes graphics and photos, is aimed at experts and an interested public and was produced with the help of the Institute for Ecological Economy Research (IÖW) Berlin in cooperation with the Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy. The brochure aims to improve the interdisciplinary networking of actors, to transfer knowledge into practice, to exploit the opportunities for regional value creation and to develop smart ideas on site.
