Summary
The rapid loss of biodiversity and ongoing climate change are also the result of intensive agriculture. At the same time, they threaten agriculture and food security. The Leibniz Lab Systemic Sustainability brings together relevant knowledge from science and society on this fundamental challenge in order to promote the development and implementation of systemic solutions. ATB is involved in two fields of the Leibniz Lab. The first field focuses on the dialogue in the pilot region Berlin-Brandenburg, which serves as a platform for transdisciplinary processes with stakeholders from different areas, such as environmental protection and nature conservation as well as agriculture and food. The proximity of the densely populated capital region to the agricultural and forestry dominated state of Brandenburg poses a variety of challenges in the metropolitan region, such as competition for water between different sectors. ATB supports this initiative through its policy-practice networks based on its infrastructure (InnoHof) and cooperates with regional partners to create synergies from existing research projects. Specific topics include new regional value networks in the agri-food system, digital agro-ecological solutions, climate adaptation through soil-conserving agricultural practices such as agroforestry systems, and rewetting of organic soils (peatlands) for climate change mitigation. Another field focuses on the multiple opportunities for change to achieve agriculture and food security in harmony with biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation. It is essential to recognise that systemic changes are needed. A holistic innovation mapping approach will be applied, taking into account technological opportunities, socio-economic levers and policy options. The aim is to prepare technological, economic, social and political innovations for sustainability transformations and to discuss them in dialogue with societal stakeholders. The ATB is involved in this process through the co-production of knowledge and the co-design of alternative pathways up to the preparation of real-world experiments to test innovative innovation pathways.
