According to the project “The future of food waste: challenges and opportunities for valorisation in Europe” (EUBis (TD 1203)) a two-day event about how to use the potential offered by biogenic residues like food waste will take place on 20-21 September 2016 in Wageningen (Netherlands).
ATB scientist Dr. Joachim Venus is member of the EUBis management committee. He researches on the material use of biomass in particular on the biotechnological production of lactic acid as a main product. Raw materials for the bioconversion process are residues from agriculture and the food industry.
The final workshop is organized by COST Action TD 1203 (EUBis) and Wageningen UR Food & Biobased Research.
The EUBis Action represents a timely opportunity to develop novel strategies for the valorisation of food supply chain waste (FSCW) to new, sustainable and functional feedstocks. FSCW creates huge environmental, economic and social problems. There is now a growing recognition that the twin problems of waste management and resource depletion can be solved together through the utilisation of waste as a resource, using green and sustainable technologies.
EUBis unites researchers and stakeholders to harness the potential of FSCW as an alternative carbon source to produce commercially viable chemical commodities. The EUBis Action brings together skills and expertise that cross scientific borders, covering biology, chemistry, biotechnology and food science and technology as well as experts in environmental and economic assessment.
COST – European Cooperation in Science and Technology – is one of the longest-running European instruments supporting cooperation among scientists and researchers across Europe.
Wageningen UR Food & Biobased Research develops insights and technologies that support companies, governments and other research institutes in creating innovative solutions for a healthier, more sustainable and prosperous world.
