Aug 28, 2017: The organizers are expecting around 200 participants from science, business and politics to attend INSECTA® 2017 in Berlin on September 7 and 8, 2017. The international conference focuses on technical, economic, ecological, legal and ethical questions concerning the use of insects as feed and food as well as in the non-food sector.
Although edible insects are still considered exotic in Central Europe, on a global scale they are discussed as a valuable and sustainable alternative source of protein. What are the po-tentials for the use of insects as food, feed and in the non-food sector? Can they contribute to the recycling of organic waste? How can insect production look like?
The aim of the INSECTA® 2017 conference is to exchange knowledge and experiences between actors from science, business and politics in terms of technical, economic, ecolog-ical, political and legal issues. The topics presented and discussed range from the potential of insects for various applications, processing and safety issues, to new concepts for insect-based products. Ethical aspects of the use of insects are also addressed.
In their keynotes, internationally renowned experts will highlight the diversity and the current state of research. Ethical aspects of insect use in industrial food and non-food production are addressed by Prof. Dr. Thomas Potthast, Professor of Ethics, Theory and History of Bi-osciences at the University of Tübingen, and Speaker of the International Center for Ethics in Science at the University of Tübingen (IZEW). Prof. Dr. Harry Aiking, Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, addresses the sustainability of the use of insects as an alternative source of protein. On the second day of the conference, Prof. Dr. Andreas Vilcinskas, Head of the LOEWE Center for Insect Biotechnology and Bioresources at the Justus Liebig University Giessen focusses on the production and safety of insects.

INSECTA® was launched by the Pilot Pflanzenöltechnologie Magdeburg (PPM) in 2015 as a national symposium on the use of insects as food and feed. Since then, the event was established as an international conference with a special focus on the use insects in the non-food sector. Organizers of the INSECTA® 2017 are the Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy (ATB), Potsdam, in cooperation with Pilot Pflanzenöltechnol-ogie Magdeburg e.V. (PPM).
