Sept 29-30, 2015: Scientists of the EU COST network EUBis (COST Action TD1203) met in Potsdam, to discuss the development of pilot scale or integrated bioprocesses based on refining of food supply chain wastes.

The two-day event focused on WG2's experience in biotechnology and scale-up. The aim of the "WG Bio-processing" is to explore the science and technology surrounding the breakdown and transformation of plant-derived FSCW biowastes using biocatalysts (enzymes) and microorganisms. Part of the agenda, besides presentations and discussions, was a tour through ATB's research facilities in particular the pilot plant for biotechnologically producing lactic acid.

Food waste valorisation for sustainable chemicals, materials & fuels (EUBis)

Food supply chain waste (FSCW) creates huge environmental, economic and social problems. There is now a growing recognition that the twin problems of waste management and resource depletion can be solved together through the utilisation of waste as a resource, using green and sustainable technologies. 

The overall aim of EUBis is to bring about a critical mass of researchers and stakeholders to harness the potential of FSCW as an alternative carbon source to produce commercially viable chemical commodities. 

The COST Action TD1203 Food waste valorisation for sustainable chemicals, materials & fuels (EUBis) brings together experts from industry and researchers from 31 European nations. Chair of the Management Committee is Prof James Clark, University of York, GB. Dr. Joachim Venus, ATB, is as a German representative member of the COST Action committee.
