Sept. 21, 2015: At the "1st National Symposium on Insects as Food and Feed" held on Sept. 21, 2015 in Magdeburg, ATB scientists present current approaches in this promising field of research.
Although in many countries around the world insects quite commonly can be found on the menu - for research the use of insects as food and feed is a rather new topic. Insects are promising from the perspective of research, among other things, due to their efficient protein production
With INSECTA 2015, for the first time a national symposium on insects as food and animal feed is held in Magdeburg. The topic is related to considerable research and regulatory needs. The symposium will encourage exchange between science, industry and politics and provide an overview of the current status, the prospects and obstacles to the use of insects as feed and for human consumption in Europe. Technical, economic, ecological, political and ethical issues will be considered.
ATB scientists will present current research at the symposium:
- Isolation and characterization of flour fractions of edible insects.
Sara Bußler, Birgit A. Rumpold and Oliver Schlüter (ATB)
- Techno-economic assessment of upgrading strategies for insect meal value chains serving as a substitute for soy- and fishmeal in animal feed
Simon Praxmarer (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin) and Philipp Grundmann
- Assessing the potentials of residue-based insect cultivation for the production of fish feed
Helmut Speckmann and Werner Kloas (Leibniz-Institut für Gewässerökologie und Binnenfischerei (IGB), Berlin), Annette Prochnow and Birgit A. Rumpold (ATB)
- Safety aspects in the processing of edible insects.
Birgit A. Rumpold, Antje Fröhling and Oliver Schlüter (ATB)
