From 4 to 5 June 2024, the 7th Environment Week took place at Bellevue Palace under the motto "Together for climate neutrality". At the invitation of Federal President Steinmeier and the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU), guests from politics, business, science and the interested public met to learn about and discuss innovations and sustainable solutions for a healthy future. We presented our current research approaches for the utilisation of paludibio mass on the topic of "Products from reeds & co - value creation from rewetted peatland sites for the bioeconomy".
With our new exhibit, which was developed by us and built by the NaNo team in Potsdam, we were able to impressively present the diversity and potential of products and utilisation options made from paludibiomass. Numerous visitors took the opportunity to interactively familiarise themselves with the various raw materials, processed materials and products. Our exhibit offered information on the topic of peatland, the plants that grow there, the possible processing methods, the technology used to manage peatland and the manufacture of products. In particular, the opportunity to experience the materials directly on site was met with great interest.
Federal President Steinmeier and representatives of the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) emphasised the urgency of a transformation towards sustainable infrastructures for all in times of crisis. They emphasised that the path to climate neutrality can only succeed through collective action and the active involvement of citizens. "This is also where our research comes in," emphasised Woche der Umwelt 2024: ATB ATB was a guest at Bellevue Palace in Berlin, scientist at ATB. "The focus is on rewetting peatland in order to achieve climate protection targets. However, farmers need a perspective in order to be able to utilise their land economically at the same time. With our research, we want to help identify and establish value chains."
Our presentation at Environment Week together with our partners from science and industry showed how value creation from paludibiomass can make an important contribution to sustainable development. We presented insights into our research on current technical developments for processing peatland biomass from rewetted areas and were able to show possible products from these raw materials, such as paper, material boards and packaging materials.
We would like to thank all visitors for their interest and the stimulating, varied and interesting discussions and look forward to future dialogue and possible joint projects.
