Summary
The joint project aims to reduce emissions in animal husbandry by applying selected structural and technical measures. The focus is on pig and dairy cattle farming. Measures are examined for their effectiveness and their emission reduction effects for ammonia, odor and methane. The results will help to minimize the conflicting goals between animal welfare and environmental protection and thus contribute to further develop animal and environmentally sound husbandry methods within the framework of the BMEL livestock strategy. Research at ATB (TP 5) deals with the floor design in dairy cattle barns. In dairy barns with paved floors, much of the ammonia is produced by the mixture of faeces and urine on the gangways, which act as large emission-active surfaces. A new floor type together with improved manure sliders for planed walkways is intended to help reduce the formation of ammonia and thus the emissions of the barn through an early separation of faeces and urine and a more thorough removal. Measurements with the new floor type are carried out in four practice barns with planned gangways in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Lower Saxony and Bavaria.
