Dr. Custodio Efraim Matavel is awarded the Hermann Eiselen Science Prize 2024 for his excellent dissertation entitled ‘Integrating more efficient renewable energy technologies into food systems in Central Mozambique: implications to food and nutrition security’, which he completed at Humboldt University in Berlin in cooperation with the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF). The award ceremony took place on 11 September 2024 at the Tropentag 2024 conference in Vienna.
The Hermann Eiselen Science Prize is awarded every two years by the fiat panis foundation and honours outstanding dissertations that address the fight against hunger and malnutrition in countries with food deficits. This year, the independent jury honoured Dr. Matavel's research work on improving food security in developing countries with the help of innovative renewable energy technologies with one of three prizes of 10,000 euros.
We warmly congratulate Dr. Matavel on this outstanding achievement and wish him continued success in his research. In the DigiMix-PA project, he has been focusing on breaking down barriers to digitalisation in agriculture and on testing and implementing precision crop farming at ATB since May 2023. He is also evaluating the role of digital technologies in the EU project D4AgEcol, which aims to facilitate the transition to agroecological farming.
