Charles R. Stumbo Award for Kai Reineke

7th March 2013: Kai Reineke, scientist at the ATB in the research program Quality and safety of food and feed, is the winner of the Charles R. Stumbo Student Paper Competition 2013

Within his study on “The release of dipicolinic acid — the rate-limiting step of Bacillus endospore inactivation during the high pressure thermal sterilization process” fundamental insights into the inactivation mechanisms of bacterial spores during high pressure and thermal processing were gained. 

The Charles R. Stumbo Award honors outstanding papers presenting researched progress in methodologies, techniques, system technologies, or other topics relevant to thermal and/or non-thermal processing of food or biological materials including pharmaceuticals to make them shelf stable by inactivating pathogenic and spoilage-causing microorganisms. Kai presented his study and received the award from Board Chairman Rick Kimball during the annual meeting of the Institute for Thermal Processing Specialists (IFTPS) in San Antonio, Texas, USA (photo).
