Cancelled: March 17, 2020: GO-GRASS - New utilisation concepts for a forgotten resource

The ATB Colloquium presents of EU project GO-GRASS, coordinated by ATB, and especially ATB's research contribution. GO-GRASS focuses on the development of circular business models for the use of this forgotten resource.

The aim of GO-GRASS is to use new biomass utilisation concepts to improve nutrient recovery, contribute to greater self-sufficiency in raw materials and reduce energy consumption - thus strengthening rural regions throughout Europe.

The international project consortium has formed around four promising regional demonstration sites: in the Netherlands, Sweden, Germany and Denmark. Here, work has already begun to build new value chains based on previously unused green waste.

The Dutch demonstration project uses grass growth from roadsides to produce high-quality packaging and paper. In Sweden, reed grass is shredded and pressed into briquettes - an innovative material for animal bedding that can then be used as fertilizer and for biogas or heat production. The German demonstration site is located in the idyllic Lower Oder Valley National Park. Here grass from the wetlands is processed into biochar, which can be used as fertiliser and to improve the water storage capacity of rather dry soils. The demonstration plant in Denmark operates a small refinery for the production of proteins from grass. The protein concentrate can be fed to pigs and poultry as a dietary supplement and to dairy cows to increase milk yield.
