Summary
Alongside climate change, water efficiency is a key issue of the 21st century. Sustainable consumption and production is among the UN’s 17 sustainable development goals. Climate change intensifies droughts and heavy rainfall, impacting regional water availability. In Germany, 99% of agricultural water comes from precipitation, which varies spatially and seasonally. Brandenburg, with sandy soils and low water storage, faces frequent shortages, especially from April to June, requiring additional irrigation. The AgroHyd-X project aims to enhance water efficiency by deploying X-band weather radars in Berlin-Brandenburg for high-resolution precipitation data. These radars supplement existing DWD systems, providing 100m x 100m data for advisory services. Integrating this data and developing standardized water efficiency assessments support sustainable agriculture. Collaboration among researchers, farmers, and authorities is essential for technology transfer and securing water supply. AgroHyd-X also promotes digital farming technologies, addressing the shortage of young farmers through improved information exchange and data transparency.
