Field day “Biochar in Agriculture“ in Berge: German and Malaysian partners of the joint research project “Biochar in Agriculture - Perspectives for Germany and Malaysia” will present recent results. The fieldday addresses scientists but is also open to the interested public.

The project investigates the use of charred biomass material (biochar) in agriculture to provide a better understanding of economic and environmental potentials of biochar. A special focus is set on the GHG mitigation potential of biochar use and its economic costs.

The consortium is led by the Leibniz-Institute for Agricultural Engineering Potsdam-Bornim e.V. (ATB) in cooperation with the Leibniz-Centre for Agricultural Landscape (Zalf), the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW), Technical University of Berlin (TU), Humboldt-University Berlin (HU) and the University of Putra Malaysia (UPM).

In particular, our consortium is analyzing the impact of several biochars on soil fertility in terms of yield potential, water holding capacity, nutrient dynamics and soil biology in laboratory and field experiments (Brandenburg and Malaysia). Based on these analyses potential environmental impacts will be estimated together with cost effects at farm level and welfare analysis at national and  international levels.

During the field day in Berge, selected intermediary results will be presented by the project partners (in English).
