The project “pH-BB: Precision liming in Brandenburg” was named the winner in the “Digitalization” category by a jury of experts at the EIP-AGRI Innovation Awards 2024 in Estoril (Portugal) on May 7, 2024. pH-BB was thus able to prevail against 5 co-nominated projects from a total of 40 applicants in this category. There were a total of 238 applications from all over Europe, of which 30 projects were nominated in 6 categories. A big thank you goes to all our colleagues and supporters.
Almost three quarters of arable land in Brandenburg does not have an optimal pH value. The values are either too high or too low, and often within the same field. This leads to reduced yields and a deterioration in soil fertility.
The aim of the pH-BB project was to sensitize farmers to the importance of liming and to provide them with precise tools for site-specific soil characterization and determination of lime requirements in order to adjust the pH value of the soil in a targeted and optimal manner. For this purpose, a fully digitized workflow was developed that implements all necessary steps from sensor-based soil mapping to algorithms for data processing, a novel approach to lime requirement calculation and a user-friendly decision support system (DSS) for generating and creating variable-rate lime application maps.
A big thank you goes to all the contributors and supporters! Congratulations on this award and good luck with your future research.
