80 participants from about 20 countries were guests at ATB to discuss the opportunities and possibilities of modeling in horticulture. From June 12 to 14, 2023, the ATB and the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS) hosted the VII Model-it Symposium.
Modern insights in the realm of system biology, new developments in ICT and IoT, and the high complexity of modern production systems have pushed forward the development of novel modelling tools and techniques including advanced statistical data analysis, digital twin and their applications in production, storage and logistics of fruit and vegetables.
About 80 experts from almost all continents met at ATB in early June to update each other on their research and exchange experiences. During two intensive days, they gave more than 40 scientific presentations and presented their research on modeling in the horticultural value chain with 28 posters. The Book of Abstracts is already available online, while the long versions of the papers will soon appear in a digital volume ISHS ACTA Horticulturae series.
For her work on the weight loss of kiwis in packaging systems using the Monte Carlo approach, a jury awarded Raquel Lozano with the ISHS Young Minds award for the best oral presentation. Similarly, Akshay Sonawane was honored for the best poster, which presented his work on modelling of ethylene scavenger for fruit packaging. Both happily and proudly received the award at the evening event, during which the participants were able to explore Potsdam by boat. On the last day, a tour of the ATB's research laboratories and pilot plants rounded off the successful symposium.
The VIII Model-It symposium will take place again in 2027. This time Stellenbosch University, South Africa invites the participants to its institution. The experts in modeling of horticultural processes are already looking forward to the next exciting event.
