ATB joins new alliance for fruit growing, viticulture and vegetable cultivation

ATB is pleased to announce its participation in the newly founded Alliance for fruit growing, viticulture and vegetable cultivation. Together with ten other leading research institutions from German-speaking countries, ATB is committed to innovation and sustainability in agriculture.

The alliance, founded on 21 November 2024, aims to address the pressing challenges facing the fruit, wine and vegetable sectors. By pooling resources and expertise, the partners from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy will work together on a wide range of research projects, promote talent development and strengthen knowledge transfer in research and agriculture, as well as make the sector more attractive to young people.

‘Fruit, wine and vegetables are knowledge-intensive crops that require specialised agricultural expertise and constant innovation in cultivation, pest control, processing and storage. These are major challenges for farmers,’ explains Prof. Dr. Barbara Sturm, Scientific Director at ATB. ‘Through our strengthened cooperation, the alliance aims to develop sustainable, transregional solutions and to inspire young talents for research as well as for horticulture and speciality crops by offering attractive educational opportunities, thus preparing the next generation for the future.’

The main objectives of the alliance include:

  • Developing sustainable solutions to address ecological and economic challenges in agriculture
  • Promoting innovation through joint research projects and knowledge transfer
  • Attracting young talent to the agricultural sector
  • Strengthening the international visibility of the fruit, wine and vegetable sector

The ATB contributes its expertise in state-of-the-art pre- and post-harvest technologies for fruit growing to the partnership. Together, we will be able to address current challenges such as the digitalisation of horticulture, adaptation to climate change, improving resource efficiency, reducing food waste and transforming to a plant-based diet.

The eleven partners of the alliance are: Laimburg Research Centre, Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (I), Agroscope (CH), Hochschule Geisenheim University (D), Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences (D), Highschool and Federal Office of Viticulture and Pomology Klosterneuburg (A), Julius Kühn Institute (D), Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy (D), Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (D), University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (A), Wädenswil Centre of Viniculture (CH).
