Powerful presence: ATB biochar research at the Boston ACS Meeting

Boston, August 16-20, 2015: As part of the 250. National Meetings der American Chemical Society (ACS) ATB scientist Judy Libra together with colleagues from USA invites to a symposium on the potentials and limits of hydrothermal carbonization.

During the one-day event results achieved so far at the ATB in the field of hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC) will be presented. Scientists who have recently carried out research on carbonization of biomass residues in the project group APECS will participate: among them are Axel Funke, today at KIT Karlsruhe, Jan Mumme, Edinburgh University, GB, Toufiq Reza, University Nevada, USA, as well as ATB scientist Benjamin Wirth.

Hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC) is a promising technology to converse residues from agriculture, industry as well as communities into innovative materials or energy umzuwandeln. Chemistry offers enormous ways to modify the product characteristics as needed and thus produce carbon-based designer materials for a variety of applications - sorbents for environmental applications as well as innovative energy storages or soil additives.

The symposium will provide an overview of recent developments in the field of hydrothermal carbonization - from basic research to applied technologies. It provides a platform for discussion both between disciplines as well as between research and practice.

Besides Judy Libra the organizers of the symposium are: Kyoung S. Ro and SeChin Chang, both USDA-ARS, and Charles Coronella from the University of Nevada, USA.

The 250th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS) is themed “Innovation - from discovery to application“. The meeting is held from August 16 to 20, 2015 in Boston, USA. More than 12,000 scientists, students and chemistry experts will participate. The program covers more than 7,000 presentations organiszed in technical symposia.
