16th Oct 2013: Increasing water efficiency in agriculture
In her keynote speech at this year’s World Food Day Colloquium in Hohenheim, ATB scientist Judy Libra outlined the need to harvest more crop per drop of water. “We have to improve efficiency in whole chain to reduce water use in agriculture that is for certain”, she said.
Judy Libra described the concept of „AgroHyd“ as a promising approach to reduce water consumption at farm level and introduced the ATB Modeling Database tool that can be used to evaluate differences in water productivity between farm systems and regions. The database can be used as a reference for farmers and other decision makers to develop strategies to improve local water productivity.
“Water Efficiency for Food Security” was in the focus of this year’s World Food Day Colloquium on October 16th in Hohenheim. The meeting was held by the Food Security Center and the Institute of Agricultural Engineering of the University of Hohenheim. Highlight of the international, scientific event was the granting of the Justus Liebig Award to Prof. Dr. Zhu Ling by the foundation fiat panis.
