Summary
In view of the targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in industrial production and considering the scarcity of fossil resources the need for increased use of biogenic resources is obvious. Growth opportunities for bio-based products are great where biotechnological conversion of starch, sugar, cellulose, etc. to source materials for (basic) chemicals (eg lactic acid biopolymers) is becoming an economically interesting alternative for petroleum-based methods. Tropical regions such as Colombia play a significant role in the production of agricultural primary products and in the recycling of waste materials / by-products from processing. Colombia is one of the world's leading coffee producers and processors and therefore has enormous potential for raw and residual materials. The latter offer the best conditions as a substrate for biotechnological exploitation are to be used more efficiently - especially the sugary "mucilage".
