Summary
The aim of the SALIX_AFS joint project is to establish various model agroforestry systems in which shrub willows are planted to produce willow rods. The willow rods are to be processed into an endless willow thread and finally into textile semi-finished products. As a co-product, willow bark with the highest possible salicylate content is to be obtained for extraction. The investigations include the breeding of optimal willow types, the development of process engineering for harvesting and further processing, and economic evaluation. Public relations work is to support the transfer into practice. Harvesting and processing methods are being developed at the ATB; these include bark separation and processing, splitting of the rods, splitting of the rods, as well as questions of storage and logistics. In addition to harvesting the rods, this includes the process steps of bark separation, splitting the rods into rails, storage and logistics, and preparing the bark for extraction.
