Healthy soils for a sustainable future: New brochure highlights innovative soil research

Brochure ‘Ressource Boden’ (Source: BMBF)

Soils are the basis of life for plants, animals and humans and play an important role in climate protection. The BonaRes and Rhizo4Bio research initiatives funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) have developed innovative approaches to the sustainable use of soils in recent years. A new brochure now presents the diverse research projects and their results. These include the BonaRes project "Integrated System for Site-Specific Soil Fertility Management" (I4S), which is coordinated at ATB.

The various research initiatives have dedicated nine years to the sustainable use of soils. The publication shows how interdisciplinary cooperation and long-term research contribute to a better understanding of soil functions and open up new avenues for sustainable agriculture as well as environmental and climate protection.

The brochure addresses farmers, scientists and decision-makers, making the findings accessible for practical application. For example, sensor-based technologies - such as those developed in the I4S project - offer farmers valuable tools for precise and site-specific cultivation. Together, the research initiatives help to protect soil as a resource and ensure food security for future generations.
