Summary
Poplar agroforestry systems (AFS) enable climate-adapted agriculture and are also an important source of raw materials for established and new value chains in the timber industry. The focus of the project is on the further development and demonstration of best-practice AFS for the production of poplar wood for material and energy value chains that fulfil the requirements of the wood industry in terms of material properties, quality and costs. To this end, the ATB is investigating fundamental questions of optimised cultivation layout, suitable rotation times, variety selection and their impact on the agricultural process chain. In addition, new optimised methods, particularly for cultivation, care and harvesting, are being developed and tested in practice. Subsequent process stages of optimised storage and drying are also part of the investigations - these essentially determine the product properties (quality, costs and availability) that are decisive for the timber industry.
