Coordinating Institute
Leibniz-Institut für Agrartechnik und Bioökonomie e.V. (ATB)

Summary
The aim of the project is to increase the efficiency of newly constructed and existing biogas plants by optimizing the whole process chain of biogas production from fermentation to storage of digestate, while at the same time minimizing greenhouse gas emissions. A calculation model developed by ATB will be applied to large-scale biogas plants. The model takes into account the characteristics of different fermentation substrates as well as the relation between the retention time within the digester, gas formation and the storage period of the digestate. Reliable basic data are required for the application of the calculation model. Practically relevant basic data will be acquired through monitoring of 10 large-scale biogas plants and accompanying laboratory investigations of the gas formation potential of fermentation substrates and digestates. Based on the results of the model calculations, the feeding of existing biogas plants can be optimized and thus, it will be possible to enhance the methane formation in the fermenter and to minimize the residual gas production of the digestate. Furthermore, a calculation tool will be developed for the optimal design of fermenter and gas-tight storage tanks of newly built biogas plants for biogas production from cattle and pig slurry with typical co-substrates.
