Summary
The development of a bio-based circular economy poses major challenges, including the development of sustainable technologies and management measures to reduce methane emissions from manure storage or to increase methane yields in biogas plants. Both processes are based on the activity of many different microorganisms, which are interconnected in complex ways. The aim of this project is to decipher the connectivity of the microbiomes, with particular emphasis on the detection of indicative microbial associations that are related either to a reduction in methane emissions (manure storage) or to an improved methane yield (biogas plants). In addition to ongoing projects, 300 metagenome datasets based on Illumina and nanopore sequencing will be collected. The focus of this project is the collection of so-called metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), whose connectivity is analysed by network analyses. This enables an assessment of positive or negative interactions and also the identification of indicative microbial taxa and their associations in the overall structure of the microbiome. This information can be used to integrate microbiological aspects into process and system modelling concepts. The sequencing costs were funded by the DFG.
