In an interview with the VDI, Prof. Barbara Sturm, scientific director of the ATB, reports on how agricultural technology can help to cope with the enormous challenges facing agriculture.
Agriculture is currently dealing with many issues, such as sustainability, adaptation to climate change and animal health. Which challenges are most pressing for farmers and how agricultural technology and artificial intelligence can contribute to mastering these tasks today but also in the future were questions to which Prof. Barbara Sturm gave answers in the interview "More sustainable agriculture needs technical innovation" with the VDI on November 17, 2022.
Prof. Barbara Sturm became president of the European Society of Agricultural Engineers (EurAgEng) at the AgEng-LAND.TECHNIK 2022 conference. In the interview, she also explained her goals and tasks that come with this role.
From the ATB director's point of view, political decision-makers will have to be more informed about the need for further innovations in the future. Today's technologies are optimized for today's systems, but they are not enough to achieve sustainable transformation.
As part of her work, she also aims to intensify international exchange in agriculture, such as with the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE). She also wants to encourage young people, especially engineers, and provide them with a platform for exchange and collaboration.
