Summary
The collaborative project, coordinated by the ATB, aims at using the material of hop plants and stems by establishing the scientific and technical conditions for the development of a technological chain for the treatment and processing of hop residues. After the harvest and the stationary recovery of the umbels (which are the valuable hop constituents), the plant remains - either whole or chopped - distributed in the fields. The residues are therefore subject to uncontrolled natural degradation and are not used materially despite a relatively large biomass potential. Within the framework of the project, the principle technical feasibility of selected technical utilization routes for hop plants and stems as well as intermediates derived from them will be examined as examples for the construction and materials industry. Research work at ATB involves the provision and processing of hop plants for further processing; process steps are also being evaluated technically and economically.
