Summary
The partly irreplaceable trees in the historical gardens and parks in Brandenburg are suffering from the consequences of climate change. There are many reasons for this: long dry periods with record heat in summer, a drop in the groundwater level and the sandy soil ensure that the trees are increasingly weakened and eventually die, in some cases accelerated by pest infestation. Scientific institutions in the state of Brandenburg, the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg and the Free University of Berlin have joined forces in a research project to contribute to a sustainable solution to save the trees. The focus is on humic substances. A chemical-thermal process, hydrothermal humification, will be used to extract humic substances from residual biomass with a high degree of efficiency while almost completely preserving the carbon that is bound in the plant material. These so-called artificial humic substances (KHS) from regenerative biomass correspond to natural humic substances in terms of effectiveness and, as a type of plant biostimulant, are intended to contribute to improving the resilience of plants to abiotic and biotic stressors.
