Delicious and healthy fruit - what consumers want to see on their plates requires detailed knowledge, smart technologies and a great deal of exploratory spirit on the part of producers. At Science Symposium on 7 February 2025 organised by ATB and Fruit Logistica, interested parties were able to gain insights into current research issues and existing fruit-related infrastructures.

In four sessions over four hours, researchers from all over the world presented their scientific and methodological approaches to the production and processing of fresh foods such as fruit and vegetables. Artificial intelligence played a central role here. Whether in cultivation, phenotyping, storage or drying. Deep learning and neural networks are a key technology for deriving decision-making aids from extensive sensor data and creating detailed knowledge about sweet delicacies. By presenting existing infrastructures such as the ATB Technology Garden and the LIDO open-air laboratory at the Laimburg Research Centre, the researchers created space for new collaborations.

The Science Symposium was organised as a platform for the interdisciplinary exchange of information by the Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy in cooperation with Fruit Logistica. Fruit Logistica is the leading international trade fair for the fruit trade, where the entire spectrum of the fruit and vegetable sector is exhibited. In 2026, the ATB will once again organise the science symposium at Fruit Logistica.
