Aug 20, 2014: ATB scientist Jürgen Kern at the „Climate Engineering Conference 2014” on the potential of biochar for soil improvement and for carbon sequestration in agriculture.
From 18. – 21. August 2014, the „Climate Engineering Conference 2014” is held in Berlin to focus on risks and challenges related to technologies and techniques for manipulating the global climate in order to moderate effects of climate change – a topic that is being discussed increasingly confrontationally. The conference strives to engage in critical global discussions by bringing together the research, policy, and civic communities to discuss the highly complex and interlinked ethical, social and technical issues that come into focus when discussing climate engineering.
Improved land management has the potential to mitigate climate change. In the conference session "Biogenic Carbon Sequestration: multifunctionality for global resilience" the potential for C sequestration and the problems and opportunities of implementation are discussed.
ATB scientist Dr. Jürgen Kern, who has investigated in several projects the effects of biochar as soil amender, is focussing in his presentation "Options to enhance soil carbon sequestration on arable land" on the potential of biochar for soil improvement and for carbon sequestration in agriculture.
Biochar and its potential for agriculture is topic in the ATB research programs "Material and energetic use of biomass" and "Technology assessment in agriculture" and the object of several third party funded projects (APECS, Biochar in Agriculture, etc.)
