Offers for PhD students
We offer outstanding graduates of the natural and engineering sciences the opportunity to pursue a doctorate at the ATB in conjunction with a partner university. The university supervision is mainly carried out by jointly appointed professors or private lecturers at the Berlin universities ((Humboldt University, Technical University and Free University) and the University of Potsdam. Supervision by professors who are not employed at ATB is also possible.
Available PhD positions, which are usually financed by third-party funds, are advertised on our job portal.
Scholarship holders are welcome.
Targeted support of PhD studends
The framework conditions for doctoral graduations are described in ATB's PhD agreement and in its career development strategy, which follows the recommendations of the Leibniz Association.
We support PhD students through close integration into the ATB working groups, our structured PhD program 'Bioecomony' and training offers.
The doctoral program 'Bioeconomy' offered by ATB and held in English, provides doctoral students with subject-specific and interdisciplinary knowledge, methodological competence in e.g. statistics as well as interdisciplinary qualification in good scientific practice, research data management, communication and technology transfer.
In addition, ATB doctoral students have access to a wide range of qualification programs, especially in key skills such as scientific writing, presentation, project management and career planning. These offers are provided in close cooperation with other institutions of the science region Berlin/Brandenburg (e.g. Humboldt Graduate School, Potsdam Graduate School, pearls - Potsdam Research Network).
Quality assurance for the doctoral work
A doctoral agreement is signed at the beginning of the doctoral phase and secures the scientific supervision at the ATB as well as the cooperation with the university. It regulates the duties and rights of the doctoral candidates. The topic of the doctorate, the work plan and the duration are agreed upon in a binding agreement, as well as the doctoral candidate's obligation to give lectures and publish papers. The agreement also takes into account the personal situation of the doctoral candidates and is intended to allow for the reconciliation of family and work responsibilities.
Annual progress reports shall be the basis for an interim evaluation. In a discussion with the doctoral committee, perspectives for the remaining doctoral period and, if necessary, beyond that will be outlined. The doctoral committee ist constituted by, among others, the executive board, scientists and the representatives of the doctoral candidates.
PhD representation
Every year, the doctoral candidates elect two delegates who represent the interests of the doctoral candidates vis-à-vis the institute's management. They regularly participate in the discussions of ATB's collegium and thus realize the active participation of the PhD students in the institute's internal committees.
Within the Leibniz Association, the PhD students are organized in the Leibniz-PhD-Network.
Persons of trust
For support in all questions and problems related to graduation at ATB, the doctoral candidates elect two persons of their confidence from among the doctoral scientists.
PhD Days
The regularly held PhD-Days serve in particular the professional exchange, but also the clarification of questions and problems around the doctorate. In this context, PhD students can present their research work in a familiar atmosphere, practice lecturing for conferences, and exchange suggestions and criticism. Former doctoral students of the ATB regularly report on career paths after their doctorate at the ATB.
Meetings, excursions and sports activities organized by the doctoral students themselves also contribute to team building.
